Mike Smith |
Liverpool’s Mike Smith, the Northwest’s premier saxophone exponent and is absolutely fabulous at weddings. He is one of the prestigious graduates from Macca’s LIPA talent factory where he graduated with a first class honours degree - since then Mike proceeded to tour the planet as session man par-excellence for super-talents such as Steve Winwood, Purple’s Ian Paice and new generation soulster/rapper Craig David. Not bad for a kid that took up the instrument to escape math’s lessons on a Tuesday.
Mike can currently be seen blowing his horn with Europe’s premier Frank Zappa aficionados the mighty Muffin Men, Kid Creole, Ian Paice, and Sandi Thom and regularly performs on BBC radio Merseyside.
Since completing his debut album ‘Ginger Tunes’ in 2010 Mike has been playing gigs and jazz festivals up and down the country with his own aptly named "Ginger Tunes" Quartet.
The album features his stylish signature writing and sound, described…this easy cool sounding and exquisite jazz soul travelogue glows in its Sanbornesque LA groove – blended with R&B and funkier counterpart part tracks it’s white soul fusion is a joy for the hips and the ears.
Live this twenty something epoch making jazzier and his Quartet conjures up a mesmerizing performance and sound interlacing that jazz with the coolness of 70’s Bob James, images of a music era where instrumental dexterity and melodic finesse graced the airwaves along side singer/songwriters.
Some of music’s iconic moments have glistened in the bell of the sax and any genre is stronger when heralded by youth; Mike Smith is just beginning his journey to the top.
